Orphan Boy

Orphan Boy are a rock/pop trio that formed in Cleethorpes in February 2005.  They soon got the fuck out of there and moved to Manchester where they signed to Concrete Recordings. (Though two of them are now back in their beloved Cleethorpes)

They began by making a kind of post-post punk music in which choruses were forbidden and lots of guitar strings got snapped.  This became known as Two-Chord Council Pop, the culmination of which was their (classic) debut album, ‘Shop Local’, released in 2008.

The orphans have a loyal fanbase, known formally as the Bebop Council Pop Orphanite Anti-Social Brigade, informally as the Orphanites and a record label that claims to be guided by the ghost of John Peel.  As a band they have learnt to buy bananas from service stations to gain best value for money and, once, nearly froze to death sleeping in Soho Square in the middle of winter.

Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree is unquestionably one of the most difficult-to-categorize and innovative bands working today.

The band is fronted by Steven Wilson, who also is well-known for his work producing other artists, from Swedish progressive metal group Opeth, to Norwegian chanteuse Anja Garbarek. He also has several other projects, including No-Man, Bass Communion, and Blackfield.

Over their career the band have been on an incredible journey; from a solo studio project created by Steven Wilson in the late eighties to a Grammy nominated act and one of the world’s most revered live bands, currently selling out arenas across the globe and wowing fans with their incredible performances.

Anathema

Anathema have been at the forefront of the UK rock/metal movement for many years. They began their journey as pioneers of melodic heavy music, influencing a myriad of bands to follow them, before outgrowing all genres and limitations as they fearlessly explored new territory and new ways to express feeling through sound.

Formed in Liverpool in 1990, the band’s sound and musical vision has continually evolved over the ensuing years while always remaining true to the band’s original goal of creating forward-thinking, meaningful, passionate, and honest music. With each release they moved beyond the boundaries of limited scenes and pigeon holes, creating a complex and emotive atmospheric sound.

Anathema consists of brothers Vincent, Daniel and Jamie Cavanagh, alongside childhood friends John Douglas and his sister Lee, who is an incredible singer in her own right. The line-up is completed by Les Smith, who brings much in the way of production expertise to the band. There is a deeper bond in the group that transcends usual band politics, ego, and self-interest. They have a shared vision: to make the most incredible music they possibly can.

Pulled Apart By Horses

Pulled Apart By Horses‘ highly-anticipated debut album will not disappoint those lucky enough to witness their incendiary live shows. ‘Chaotic’ is a massive understatement for the nuclear-powered PABH live experience, their every show a violent whirlwind of noise and acrobatics – of the body as much as the guitar. In a much kinder sense, the band’s onstage antics echo the medieval execution technique after which they were named.

As their reputation as a band has grown, they’ve found themselves princes of a new UK underground as support band of choice for aggro-rock’s ivy league, racking up tours with Future Of The Left, Biffy Clyro, Glassjaw and The Bronx. The album expertly captures the cavalcade of their live shows while expanding the sound into that of a proper gleaming rock record.

The Young Veins

The Young Veins are an outfit with both intellect and ambition – a band that knows exactly who they are and where they are going. As 23 year old frontman, Ryan Ross, re-imagines 60’s pop, tropicalia, old New York girl groups and fuzzed-out psychedelia to Nuggets-era garage rock and Stax-inspired soul, you will hear a band that is mature beyond its years and truly excited by the craft of songwriting– uncovering what came before and anxious to see what’s ahead.

Ryan Ross spent his formative years as the primary songwriter, guitarist and singer in Las Vegas’ wildly popular Panic! at the Disco, a band that rode to the top of the charts on dance-floor synths and impressive rock theatrics. However, over the course of two albums, Ross’s songwriting and musicianship began to evolve, mature and outgrow the stylistic bounds of the band. He and Panic! bassist Jon Walker had discovered their talents as a songwriting duo, and made the decision to step out on their own. Armed with new material, Ross and Walker made their departure, moved to Los Angeles, and formed what is now The Young Veins.

Beatsteaks

Beatsteaks is a bomb (or grenade, rocket, dynamite or some other preferably menacing expression that underlines the musically explosive force of our five friends)! Don’t get the wrong impression here: the five guys from Berlin are all pacifists, yet the goal for the band’s latest album ‘Limbo Messiah’ was obvious: “we wanted to set off another couple of bombs again”, says singer Arnim Teutoburg-Weiss. Beatsteaks have already succeeded in creating an unmistakable full-speed-ahead sound on their four previous albums. ‘Smack Smash’ (2004) delivered the climax so far and was even awarded Platinum status in their native Germany.

It’ s somehow typical that composing, rehearsing and playing live is not enough for these crazy citizens of Germany’s capital.  Freely adapted from the punk motto “Do It Yourself” the somewhat scatterbrained, but likeable band, takes care of almost all aspects of what is a complex organisation. Torsten works in the Mail Order shop, Arnim helps with management and designs tasteful T-shirts (or at least what he considers tasteful). Bernd takes care of the equipment. Peter has taken on the Herculean task of answering all of the band’s e-mails.

Little Fish

Little Fish are guitarist, singer and songwriter Juju, a lithe, brunette androgyne and Nez, a powerhouse, take no prisoners drummer. The Oxfordshire duo, who first met in a fish and chip shop, joined division in 2010 for their debut album ‘Baffled and Beat’.

JuJu’s voice haunts and mesmerizes in a similar way to Patti Smith. What’s in evidence throughout the band’s music is passion and intelligence, maybe even a little anger, but it’s melodic and true to the song. For JuJu music is a love/hate thing, it really affects her emotionally. Emotion is a word that is ever present when listening to JuJu delivering her poetic lyrics over their stripped down, ready to rock music.  Her songwriting comes from her French mother who wrote songs when she was younger and from her granddad who wrote them while a prisoner of war. For JuJu doing other people’s songs was never an option.
