Ocean Colour Scene

In 1996 Ocean Colour Scene, the four-piece band from Birmingham, would release “Moseley Shoals” one of British rock’s greatest records.  In February The Riverboat Song exploded across the airways courtesy of Chris Evans, host to the biggest programme in the UK, the Radio One Breakfast Show.  The impact was immense.  The opening track on Moseley Shoals originated from one of Steve Cradock’s conquering riffs and was an apt introduction to one of THE albums of that year.

Moseley Shoals pays homage to the album art form.  Connected.  Thematic. Visionary.  The music was explosive.  Ballads sit beside rockers.  A blended marriage; something old, something new, sometimes borrowed, the truth of the Blues.  The title: a tribute to the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, 3614 Jackson Highway. The front cover: four faces looking out from under the Victorian monument shot in Jesphson Gardens, Leamington Spa.

Seerauber Jenny

Seeräuber Jenny is collaboration between singer /songwriter Fran Barker and musician / producer Neil Claxton. Fran hails from Chippenham in Wiltshire and Neil is based on Manchester.

Neil has previously enjoyed a successful career with big beat leading lights Mint Royale, who have enjoyed No.1 and No. 2 singles, as well as collaborating with the likes of Lauren Laverne and Duffy and doing much remix and soundtrack work.

The Narcoleptic Dancers

The Narcoleptic Dancers are Anton Louis Jr and Melody Van Kappers, a Franco-Dutch duo, who are half brother and sister. Recently reconciled, destiny brought them together through their passion for music. A fresh pop folk act with a difference.  Melody passed on a carefree attitude to Anton that he had never known as a child. They took the name ‘The Narcoleptic Dancers’ in homage to their father. The sports press had given him the nickname due to his peculiar haircut and his nonchalant dribble. Their trademark: the Johnny “Narcoleptic Dancer” Van Kappers haircut. She writes and sings. Anton composes and produces. And they’ve asked the famous Ramon & Pedro to take care of their image. Their songs are gentle, fresh, light, poetic and energetic, just as they are, on stage and in life.

Sonic Youth

Sonic Youth could be considered as one of the most influential bands to have emerged from the alt rock Seattle scene.
Hits Are For Squares is collection of songs from Sonic Youth’s career curated by a diverse group of artists, actors, directors and musicians whose own progressive and unconventional style is akin to the freestyle expression of Sonic Youth’s music.

The artisans handpicked by Sonic Youth include Catherine Keener, Beck, Mike D, Radiohead, Portia De Rossi, Diablo Cody, Allison Anders, Dave Eggers and Mike Watt, Eddie Vedder, Michelle Williams, Flea, Gus Van Sant, David Cross, Chloe Sevigny, and The Flaming Lips.

The album also includes track “Slow Revolution” written and recorded for the original release.  Hits Are For Squares includes a wide range of songs spanning the majority of Sonic Youth’s recorded works showing the diverse impact and influence they continue to have on the arts community.

Little Roy

Battle For Seattle is a collection of 10 songs recorded by Nirvana covered by the legendary Little Roy in a reggae style. A man with the ‘right credentials’ Little Roy cut his first single at the legendary Studio One in 1965 and grew up in Kingston surrounded by many of Jamaican music’s biggest hitters – Prince Buster, Lee Perry, Bunny Wailer & Peter Tosh.

Later a growing interest in the emerging rasta religion saw him release some early roots classics such as ‘Prophesy’, ‘Christopher Columbus’, and ‘Tribal War’ and most recently he has worked with Adrian Sherwood releasing an album on On-U Sound Records.

Lindi Ortega

It’s obvious from the appearance that Lindi Ortega, with her ruby red lip and Mexican/Irish background, is the kind of girl that would stand out in a crowd, but she prefers to be standing in front of one. This Canadian based charismatic alt-country artist has drawn comparisons to the greats, from Emmy Lou Harris, Jonny Cash to even Devendra Banhart with her arresting distinctive vocals.

She’s no stranger to the stage, having toured with Keane, Kevin Costner’s band and most recently Brandon Flowers, where she sang lead vocals. Be sure to keep an ear out for her sweet vibrato and an eye out for her token Little Red Boots.

Ane Brun

The recording of Norwegian born singer-songwriter Ane Brun’s new album, It All Starts With One would have been underway as early as 2010, were it not for Peter Gabriel and Ani DiFranco inviting Ane on tour. Much to the frustration of her fast-growing fan base, accumulated over the previous three studio album and periods of hard touring, Ane Brun’s own album had to wait. This, however, turned out to be an advantageous move with that year spent on the world tour giving Ane time to craft her most mesmerizing record to date.
On the new album she says – “I’ve moved into new territories because it’s been 3 years since my last album, and lots of music has passed through me since then. I’ve tried new directions on stage and singing with other artists. I’ve been inspired to break my musical boundaries. I’ve wanted to take risks to get to new places.”

Produced by her friend Tobias Fröberg, it exhibits a bigger, more atmospheric sound, more extravagant arrangements and some of the most immediate melodies of her career.

Born Blonde

‘Ambitious space-rock-with-soul’ – NME

Indie luminaries Born Blonde are a West London outfit tipped for great thing for 2012. Already NME endorsed with a Radar piece and The Guardian Band Of The Day, this a band with much promise. Their hypnotic guitars and keys intertwine create a lush, widescreen palette of swooning psychedelia, which has won critics over at such an early stage.

With reference points from The Doors to Cluster to the Verve, this is a band that is not interested in the mundane. Its heady, spellbinding stuff that is ambitious in scope and indicates the emergence of perhaps the next great modern British rock n roll band.

The Violet May

If lead singer Chris McClure’s face looks chin-scratchingly familiar it’s because you’ve seen him shaven-headed, squinting and dragging on a cigarette, starring down from billboards, buses and in record stores on the cover of the Arctic Monkeys seminal debut. Hailing from the same area as Alex Turner, McClure Jr guitar teched for the Monkeys on their early tours before giving it up to concentrate on university.

The Violet May have already caught the eyes and ears of tastemakers who have backed the band from the beginning, winning 6Music support from Steve Lamacq as “his new favourite band”, BBC Radio 1’s Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens, as well as XFM’s Eddy Temple Morris and John Kennedy. The release of their debut EP will undoubtedly have ears obliterated far and wide with their bold and defiant sound.

TEETH

London’s premier electronic punk band, TEETH, rose to infamy at breakneck speed since their forming in 2008. Consisting of composer Ximon Tayki, vocalist Veronica So, and drummer Simon Whybray, TEETH enraptured a global audience with jubilant, no-rave jams and hacker dance anthems. Their much-anticipated debut WHATEVER was released on Moshi Moshi Records in September 2011.

TEETH’s ever-evolving and notorious internet presence continues to frustrate the media and hook fans. TEETH joined twitter (@T3ETH) in September of 2009 and immediately created controversy after impersonating famous writer Will Self for nine months–only ceasing out of boredom–and posting self-crafted faux BBC articles. In November 2009 Ximon hacked Lady Gaga’s account by guessing her password. He greeted her 1.5 million followers with “Hay my babies!!! LOVE GAGA??? LOVE T33TH!!!,” and “I swear my dick is not as big as T33TH’S!!!! POPWRLDSUCKZ!!! PUNX UNITE!!!! <3.”

Since then TEETH have toured with Sleigh Bells, D/R/U/G/S and Is Tropical. They’ve played alongside No Age, Dat Politics, Crystal Fighters, Times New Viking, Factory Floor, Gang Gang Dance, and were invited to play Iceland Airwaves Music Festival in October 2010. TEETH’s unwavering snotty punk attitude and precise, diverse sound keeps music critics and the masses alike continuously captivated. They’ll stop when they stop having fun.
